Q: Why is my tax bill not covered in my bankruptcy? A: Bankruptcy will cover the bills prior to the date the bankruptcy was filed. If a bill comes out after the filing date, in order for it to be included, the attorney handling the bankruptcy would have to file an amendment to the original bankruptcy filing. Q: I am under bankruptcy, how can I get a paid receipt so I can get my vehicle license tags? A: Come in person to the Office of the Tax Collector. Q: I am under bankruptcy, how can I make payment arrangements? A: We cannot make payment arrangements on bankrupt accounts. Pay whatever you can. Q: I filed Chapter 13 Bankruptcy almost a year ago, why isn't it showing in your system? A: If we do not have your account flagged as bankrupt, we never received your paperwork from the trustee. Please contact your attorney. Q: When will my mortgage company pay my tax bill? A: Loan institutions (or their tax-servicing agent) usually remit payment between November 15 and December 31. You are encouraged to verify your payment data with your loan institution. Q: When are my real & personal taxes due? A: Taxes are due each year for real estate, business personal property and individually owned personal property on September 1st. Payment without interest can be made prior to January 5th of the following year (if the 5th falls on the weekend, payment may be made on the next business day without penalty). Mail payments are accepted by postmark as affixed by the US Postal Service). Q: I sold my house a few month ago. Why did I get the bill instead of the new owner? A: If the real property has been sold, please forward this tax notice to the new owner. Check your closing statement or contact the closing attorney if you have any questions about who is responsible for payment of the bill. Q: I have paid my tax bill and I have received a past due notice in the mail. Why did this happen? A: Your payment may have crossed in the mail with the delinquent notice. To verify the status of your account you may call our office. Registered Vehicle Questions & Answers Q: How do I remove a block on my tag? A: Once your bill is paid you will be given a MAV-2 receipt to present to DMV when purchasing your tag. Q: What if I do not pay my vehicle tax bill? A: All Vance County taxpayers are provided ample notice to pay their vehicle tax bill. In addition to other forced collection remedies available to the Collections' Office such as the garnishment of wages and the attachment of bank accounts, a block is placed on the ability to renew or purchase license plate tags or stickers from the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Q: I sold my registered vehicle (car, truck, van, motorcycle, etc.). How do I get this vehicle off the tax records? A: Your vehicle will not be charged anymore because you will not be renewing the tag. However, we may be able to do a proration and refund some money. We will need a copy of your Bill of Sale showing you sold the vehicle and a receipt (form FS-20) from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) showing the tag has been turned in. Q: I turned a vehicle tag into the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. What should I do concerning my vehicle taxes? A: You may be entitled to a partial refund if taxes are paid or a tax bill proration if the taxes are not yet paid. In order to make a determination as to if any adjustment is warranted, we need to see a copy of the receipt (FS-20) from Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) along with proof of ownership transfer of the vehicle. This could include a copy of the Bill of Sale. Q: I have moved to another county and I am receiving a bill from Vance County. Do I owe this bill? A: The state does not prorate vehicle property taxes from county to county. State law requires you pay the county you lived in on the day the license tag was renewed. You will need to pay this bill and submit a change of address to mail a renewal card. After you renew you tag, the DMV will give your vehicle information to your new county of residence and they will begin billing you. |
