Some 90% of all presidentially declared disasters are weather related, leading to around 500 deaths per year and nearly $14 billion in damage. To help Americans guard against the ravages of severe weather, the National Weather Service has designed "Storm Ready", a program aimed at arming America's communities with the communication and safety skills necessary to save lives and property.

Vance County has been awarded its "Storm Ready" accreditation with the National Weather Service. Presently there are nearly 100 trained severe weather SKYWARN spotters in Vance County. Having trained spotters located throughout the City and County gives a distinct advantage. After all the more warning we have that severe weather is approaching the better we can prepare. If you are interested in becoming a severe weather spotter contact your local Emergency Management Office. |
